Granite is a natural igneous stone that is quarried from the earth. True granite contains 20-60% quartz so it is not quite as durable as quartz (engineered stone). Granite comes in hundreds of different colors and usually have a “spattered” or “swirled” grain and can contain many colors within one block, slab, or countertop. It naturally contains fissures that are marginal variations in the composition of the natural stone. Fissures are not cracks and do not structurally impair the function or durability of granite. Instead, they add to the aesthetic appearance and uniqueness of each finished piece.
Natural granite stone is resistant to heat and stains. Feel free to set any pots or pans from the stove directly on top of your counter tops. The advantage to granite over quartz (engineered stone) is the color. Every piece of natural stone is an original. Although it is possible to match granite slabs, there is a finite amount. This is good for the homeowners that would like a bit of individuality from other home owners. Granite has colors that quartz can never imitate. The disadvantage to granite is that it is porous and will need to be maintained by sealing the tops every six months to a year.
